Samurai

As we continue to celebrate National Asia Pacific American Heritage Month, I now share with you my fascination with Japan and their legendary Samurais that inspired a lot of modern disciplines, art, writing and movies. The Samurai is not just a sword but a way of life that closely observes honor, family and loyalty.
Here are some of my favorite tales.

47 Ronin Story is the classic Japanese story of Lord Asano of Ako and one of the bloodiest vendettas in Japan's feudal history. In a shocking clash between the warriors and the merchant class of seventeenth century Japan, there emerged the most unlikely set of heroes--the forty-seven ronin, or ex-samurai, of Ako.

Aside from martial arts inspired movies, I love Samurai-themed stories. All that discipline and tales about honor is so fascinating, the Japanese are so spiritual their belief system is the backbone of their tradition until now. The 47 Ronin Story is an epic tale based on a true story about 47 warriors who avenged the unlawful death of their Master. The violence was gut wrenching, the politics frustrating, their patience admirable as they remain focused on their goals. Honor is a big thing for Samurais and this story perfectly illustrates how much this virtue plays a part in their lives and society.

Word is a movie is in the works based on this story starring Keanu Reeves and is scheduled for release in 2013.

Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe, need I say more? But aside from the eye candy, this movie is an epic story about a man's journey to understanding the meaning of familial loyalty and standing up for one's belief. I have to admit I still get misty eyed when I see this film.

Not exactly a conservative Samurai story but Uma Thurman wielding that sword and beheading people was an entertaining bloodbath that surely made me cry out with glee. My favorite part has got to be the one in the tea house before the ultimate showdown with Lucy Liu.

Jedi Knights, their Light Sabers and even Darth Vader's mask was inspired by the Samurai discipline. Even George Lucas wasn't immune to the lure of the Orient which probably explains why this series has a solid cult following.

  1. I don't think I've read a book about Samurai's yet. Not that I'm recalling... but this book sounds pretty interesting! I'm not sure if I have the patience to get through it or not, but if I did I bet I would actually really like it. I can't remember if I watched The Last Samurai. I should see if it's on netflix.

  2. Movies and books! They all sound Interesting... I am very fascinated with Japanese culture and I admire how disciplined the Samurai's are. I loved watching Kill Bill although I have never been able to completely watch the whole movie haha!

  3. I also love samurai books! Well, I'm pretty much fascinated with japanese culture in general... This can be a huge no-no, because the last book touching on the subject I read (Katana, a nice YA action/romance tale) was impossible to enjoy... because I kept picking on historical innacuracies. Urgh.

Anyway, you have great choices there! Thanks for sharing! :)

    1. Oh 47 Ronin this isn't anything like that. You should read a sample from Google books to see if you like it (I hope you will)

  4. I, too, featured an Asian Heritage Month Blog Event for the month of May and must tell you that I, too, am fascinated with all things Japanese including the samurai. With exception of course, my true favourite: the geisha!

I have not yet read 47 Ronin Story. Will have to pick it up and add it to my collection.

Thanks for your review including the movies. I also tear up when I watch "The Last Samurai." What a beautiful story.
