Review: Flash Gold by Lindsay Buroker

Series: The Flashgold Chronicles 1
Format: Digital
Release Date: April 1, 2011
Eighteen-year-old Kali McAlister enters her steam-powered "dogless sled" in a race, intending to win the thousand-dollar prize and escape remote Moose Hollow forever. The problem? Fortune seekers and airship pirates are after her for the secret to flash gold, her late father's alchemical masterpiece.

With her modified rifle and a pocketful of home-made smoke bombs, Kali wouldn't normally hide from a confrontation, but taking on a whole airship single-handedly is a daunting task. Unfortunately, the other racers won't assist her--they're too busy scheming ways to sabotage her unorthodox sled.

When a sword-slinging stranger shows up, wanting to hire on as her protector, she's sure he has ulterior motives, but he's the only one interested in helping her. The question is...why?

Are you looking for some quality read that promises an action-packed series full of mystery and solid steampunk action?

Try Flash Gold on for size.

The following story is set in the 1890's. in a world similar to ours, but with a few differences. Magic exists, airships aren't uncommon, and there's a backward little town called "Moose Hollow" in the Yukon.

FLASH GOLD is a 42 paged novella is designed to get you hooked and buy the next book in the series, Hunted immediately after you hit the 99% mark.

I love steampunk, I love the bells and whistles of the Victorian era but I'm lukewarm on the alternative steampunk setting, Western. The frontier and cowboys doesn't really appeal to me that much. So I was a little tentative when I started reading the novella.

And I ended up loving it!

Evil witch, they whispered. Harbinger of death and misfortune.

Kali MacAlister is a technocrat, she is an inventor of cool gadgets that puts her male counterparts on edge because she's a threat to an otherwise male dominated industry. But there's a hint of something supernatural about Kali which makes me curious if she's really a witch or her exceptional intelligence is confused with magic? Cedar is a bounty-hunter, handsome, street smart and the perfect companion to Kali. He's this unassuming hero destined to heal Kali's broken heart and provide companionship to our orphaned heroine. I am loving the contrast between these two characters, the Geek and the Brawn, and just like positive and negative ions, it's only a matter of time before these two set of fireworks.

Flash Gold is a sought after commodity similar to lithium battery multiplied thousands of times and Kali holds the key to this technology because her dad discovered Flash Gold and now everyone wants a piece of it. And thus begins Kali and Cedar's unlikely partnership.

FLASH GOLD gives us Kali and Cedar's back story, upcoming conflicts and the direction the series is taking. And with villains named Cudgel Conrad, Soapy Smith and Scar of Skagway it promises nothing but gun slinging adventure and hunter/hunted role reversals.
