Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters - they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. And fallin in love breaks all the laws of the Night World.

The apocalypse is drawing near. But four Wilf Powers can save the world from the impending doom. Circle Daybreak, an underground organization with both Night World and human members, is searching for the four who can stop the darkness.

A vampire hunter - who is half vampire - stalks her own kind to protect humans in Hunters.

In Black Dawn, Maggie stumbles upon an old Night World kingdom where the ruling vampire prince is both an enemy and an ally.

And Circle Daybreak hires Keller, a shapeshifting panther, to guard a new Wild power in Witchlight. But when Keller falls in love with the Wild Power's soulmate, her love could destroy everything.

In blue fire, the final darkness is banished.
In blood, the final price is paid.

Four to stand between the light and the shadow,
Four of blue fire, power in their blood.
Born in the year of the blind Maiden's vision;
Four less one and darkness triumphs.

One from the land of kings long forgotten;
One from the hearth which still holds the spark;
One from the Day World where two eyes are watching;
One from the twilight to be one with the dark.

Night World 3 is all about Circle Daybreak and their quest to topple the Night World by finding the Wild Powers. Each story revolves around the discovery of each Wild Power from different settings, telling the story of different warriors and soulmates.

Huntress is about Jez, a half-human vampire, who went in search for a wild power only to find out in the end that she IS the one. I didn't really connect much with this story. Don't get me wrong, it's suspenseful and packed with action scenes but for some reason I just didn't find Jez fascinating and her romance with Morgead was a little flat. If I analyze it, the story is tight but I found it easy to get distracted while reading this.

Black Dawn was very enjoyable. Maggie, a human teenager, is looking for his lost brother Miles who has been kidnapped by a witch, Sylvia. Maggie stumbled upon the Night World and met her soulmate Delos, a vampire prince. Maggie came face to face with Hunter Redfern, the Night World ringmaster and with the help of Delos, who turned out to be a Wild Power, they killed Redfern and rescued Miles. Maggie, like Jez, is a feisty heroine and a human at that, moving in the dangerous Night World. Delos is this aloof and gorgeous prince who always end up saving Grace. I like their chase and how Maggie is so fearless. Allegiances are starting to shift and two more and Circle Daybreak wins the war.

Witchlight for me is the best in the three. This time shifters are in the forefront and the story is full of twists and turns, the end is good 'ol fashioned good vs evil. So this time the Wild Power is Illiana who was rescued from the clutches of the Night World peeps and a Dragon at that. Illiana is your reluctant heroine and at one point you'll question if she IS the one they're looking for or if it's someone else. There is also a bit of love triangle involved but not as dramatic as you might expect. Keller is a shifter who realized that Galen is her soulmate. Galen is a shifter of the First House it is his duty to ally himself with Illiana to solidify the alliance between witches and shifters. Illiana is caught in the middle of life changing events. Suffice to say that there's no prying soulmates apart and everybody got what they wanted... sort of.

Final verdict: Night World in my humble opinion, is a story full of peaks and valleys. I honestly expected more considering the popularity of Vampire Diaries. The plot and the structure of the stories are interesting but when it was all laid out, it fell flat most of the time.

For one, Hunter Redfern is supposed to be this big and scary villain but the only time we've really come face to face with him is at Black Dawn. Honestly I don't really feel like he's the villain the story paints him to be. I'd watch out for the witches because it looks like they'll be winning the war hands down. Aside from him who else got his back? How can he run an army if his seasoned and trusted generals is playing for the enemy? Huh!

Anyway, volume 4 is still in the works so I'm curious on what parlor tricks Smith will be pulling out of her hat to even up the odds. Here's what I've gathered from http://night_world.webs.com/thenightworldseries.htm

Strange Fate (not yet published) Summary - Sarah Strange and her soulmate, the gentle vampire Blade, live in a peaceful New England town. Sarah's world is shattered when her family is asked to hide an arrogant male witch named Kierlan Harman. Sarah recognizes Kierlan as a soulmate and fights being drawn to him - until he's  kidnapped by the Nightworld and everything she's ever known is lost.
Sarah Strange is a fragile human girl - happy in Circle Daybreak with her soulmate, Blade, a gentle vampire. Then Kierlan comes to town. He is an arrogant witch and a Wild Power, and Sarah is strongly attracted to him, but who is her real soulmate? And is the answer waiting in the night World...

These are the only two official summaries about this book. It was meant to come out years ago, but it had been put off due to L.J Smith having personal issues. It should be out sometime in 2010.

What Do We Know? -  Well; judging by the summaries, this book is about a girl (Sarah Strange- is the 'Strange' a coincidence or does it tie in with the title?). She is living happily. She's got a vampire soulmate and they are part of Circle Daybreak, but she also has another soulmate who is a witch and just happens to be a Wild Power. Well, if Kierlan is the last wild power then he is 'One from the twilight to be one with the dark' as this is the last phrophecy. We may see who wins the battle, the Night World or Circle Daybreak. Can't be too sure about when the battle will occurr. Kierlan is also kidnapped, but the phrophecy says 'Four less one and darkness triumphs' meaning that if Circle Daybreak don't get him back all humankind will die. Hopefully, we'll also see some old characters and see what happens with them and their soulmates, and maybe see if Ash and Mary-Lynette meet up again.

• Current estimate for length is between 1,000 - 1,200 pages
• Kierlan is a shapeshifter
• LJ claims it is her most complicated book with a plot in the future and a plot in the past
• There will be a teaser at the end of the re-published Night World 3

  1. I am yet to start either of Smith's series, but they all sound so good. I hope to catch on soon. I will keep my eyes open for this especially Witchlight. I love a good shifters tale. I love anthologies period. Great review again hon, thank you :)
