Evernight

Allison Cassatta's official site
In the next twelve stories, you will read about vampires and werewolves, angels and demons, and monsters of all kinds overcoming some of the most difficult hurdles simply to find their one true love, to find their happiness
A couple of weeks ago we published our review for one of the stories in this anthology, Tears of a Mermaid by Aaron Speca and Patricia Laffoon, an adult retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid. Now to give you a better picture of this digest, I decided to give it a go and share my insights with you.

Essentially there are twelve romantica (romance+erotica) tales about werewolves, witches, vampires, mermaids and other preternatural creatures gracing the pages of Allison Cassatta's project. If you're looking for a quick read or something to fill in those minutes in a long commute or a short bedtime story then this might be ideal for you.

I like the concept of a digest, it gives us value for our time and money. A fellow blogger once referred to books as the cheapest vacation available and a collection of short stories has the potential to be a good book cruise. I also like the fact that this anthology was written by noveau writers and some of the stories are really good. The ideas behind the plots are unique and interesting (. Allison Cassatta made a very good platform for people who write on their leisure and getting published might be just what they need to keep those creative juices flowing. Who knows, some of them may be the next NYT bestselling author. So on this regard, I applaud you Ms. Cassatta for giving your fellow writers a chance.

However I find that this is more of a hit or miss thing. But then again I'm not really a fan of erotica. I like a good and steamy love story but like what I've mentioned in one of my blog posts, the dirty parts can make or break the tale, it's all about the choice and combination of words even if it's erotica. Dirty can still be classy and gritty, it doesn't have to be back alley slimey. To be more accurate, I feel that the only time the P***y word is justified to use to call the female body part is if (1) it's a rape scene, (2) people are throwing insults, (3) when you're watching porn and/or reading smut. I strongly feel that it's not appropriate to use the word to tell the story between two people in love in the throes of passion. Allison, in my humble opinion I think you should've just schucked The Vampire's Mate, it's the rotten apple in the bunch.

As for the other romantica stories, they did the stories right, pushing the boundaries and giving the readers a different spin on the usual. Romantica encourages us to explore our limits and discover for ourselves if we're ready to move away from our comfort zone. It echoes our darkest fantasies that we dare not share with other people even our lovers. Some of the short stories in Evernight screamed those musing at the top of their lungs!

So if you like romantica then Evernight is right up your alley and by all means, go and get it from Amazon or XoXo Publishing! I guarantee that you'll like it and probably contradict every point I've made in this blog.
