Case 39

I know I'm months too late to be reviewing this movie and probably most of you have already seen this. I'm one of those people who hardly goes to the theatre and would rather wait for Netflix or DirectTV to start showing the movies I'm interested in. That's one of my penny pinching schemes and with this economy, every cent counts.

Just the same I'd like to share my thoughts on Case 39 because it's a very good film. First of all I wasn't very keen on watching this because I haven't heard a lot of buzz about it and I was just curious to see the Zellweger-Cooper on-screen chemistry. Well I've been pleasantly surprised because I never expected the movie to be worth the dollar Redbox charged for it.

Going back to the story, Emily Jenkins (Zellweger) is a social worker assigned to Lilith or Lily (Jodelle Ferland who looks like a child Kristen Kreuk) who she suspects is being abused by her parents. She kept on pursuing the case until Lily called her late at night and tell her that her parents are off to get her. With the help of her cop friend Mike (Ian McShane) they found Lily stuffed inside the oven by her parents. This led to Emily applying for custody for Lily then weird things started happening and people started dying. Soon Emily started investigating and circled back with Lily's dad, there she found out that her beloved Emily is the devil's incarnate off to spread chaos and death around her.

I just hate thrillers and horror movies that involves possessed children, I find that utterly disturbing and creepy to the highest power. There isn't a lot of gore but there are classic tell-tale signs of demonic activity: bugs coming out of the body, weird phone calls with lots of static, mind reading and control, manipulation and deceit. For the majority of the movie, I thought that Zellweger's character is losing her mind just like the usual psychological thriller but come on, the name Lilith is a dead giveaway right?

If you like The Omen or Rosemary's Baby you'll certainly like this movie.

P.S. You won't be seeing a naked Cooper nor will there be any steamy scenes between them.

The movie looks creepy, if only because of that creepy little girl, isn't she the one from that Supernatural episode "Provenance"?
